Something with enough elasticity to give momentum to the initial flight, sustain the trajectory and then possibly soar. And catch is unfortunately more often that not the architects from abroad bag bigger and better opportunities to design major projects in India. There is a greater premium on International recognition; where as a local architect can reach that level only if given enough opportunities. So why architects need more opportunity to build and design local projects.

Opportunities to build at home are one such launch pad in the world of architecture and interior design. All architects fresh out of their almamaters, armed with the degrees and certificates, dream of making it big. Being known amongst the game changers of the field. Have people stop and stare at a building admiringly and recognise the name behind its form and shape and substance. But getting that kind of world-wide recognition is a process. A process that can start from home. The city, the town that the architect is in. There are numerous reasons on how setting up a solid foundation can help boost an architect’s career and why it is easier and a more viable option to start from home. Let us understand these taking Hyderabad, the Think Studio home base as an example, where Think Studios has established its name as a leading architecture and interior design firm. Think Studios has been delivering consistently competent results in Architecture and Interior designs, and have earned the name of being one of the best architecture and interior design firms in Hyderabad.

Here are some things that work in the favour of Think Studios when it comes to working as a Hyderabad based architecture and interior design firm:

  1. Familiarity with the local flavour. As a locally based architecture and design firm, Think Studios has a deeper understandingof local trends and settings. We understand what the local community looks for while hiring an architect or designer. And we try to deliver a good amalgamation to traditional living and cultural expectations with right amount modern design using appropriate technology and design. This is something which a local architect will be able to do much better.
  2. Knowledge of local building and construction codes. Each area, geographical location has some rules and regulations that are specific to that area alone and need to be adhered to. An architect based locally will have a greater understanding of the codes particular to that area, for example the GHMC, and ensure that the same are followed thoroughly.
  3. Awareness of local materials. An architect based in the area is competent in their knowledge and know-how of materials specific to that region for example the Tandur stone which comes from the Telangana region.
  4. Cost-effectiveness and ease of bringing in local talent. A Hyderabad, locally based architect and interior designer will be in contact with the artisans, weavers in that area and develop a mutually beneficial professional relationship. There will also be a greater understanding of local construction methods as well will be instrumental in bringing down construction costs.

Working locally is beneficial for the architects and designers as well as they gain:

  1. Experience of working for different budgets in the same city which can be challenging and a great learning experience.
  2. Expertise in using same local materials efficiently for different kinds and magnitudes of structures – mansions, offices, small homes.
  3. A solid word-of-mouth reputation and opportunities to get more projects and develop client trust and references.
  4. Opportunity to make a difference in the community.

Success is never an overnight job, and neither does it follow some Step1-Step2-Step3 algorithm. The only 2 things that can give a real push to the architect’s career is original, great designs and expansive experience and what better place to start than the home (base).

Combining Modern Technology with Traditional Methods – Green Architecture in India https://thinkstudios.co.in/combining-modern-technology-with-traditional-methods-green-architecture-in-india/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=combining-modern-technology-with-traditional-methods-green-architecture-in-india https://thinkstudios.co.in/combining-modern-technology-with-traditional-methods-green-architecture-in-india/#respond Mon, 15 Jun 2020 18:53:18 +0000 https://thinkstudios.co.in/?p=2080 Today the whole world is at the precipice of radical change. As the world fights the pandemic, the human population is opening its eyes to the magnitude of damage it has caused to the environment, the planet.  To the very home that it inhabits. Things are shifting in all sectors of life, from way of living, waste reduction, banning single use plastics, going local and even green buildings. A substantial shift is being observed in the field of Architecture and Interior Design in Hyderabad. The best architects in Hyderabad and around the world are taking some steps backwards in their building designs, towards heritage and culture to unlearn and undo some of the damage.

In India, we don’t have to look far, for architectural designs and building designs, to learn how we can achieve Green Architecture by combining modern technology with the traditional methods. Our rich architectural heritage offers a plethora of learnings to emulate. Ancient civilisation has presented us with innumerable examples of building design with economical use of space, working with the elements of nature to ensure the building remains cool in summers and warm in winters, using courtyards and lattices for climate controls. Today, we are returning to those techniques, combining them with modern technology and making our Buildings Architecture in Hyderabad.

A Green Building or Green Architecture will use technology and designs that enable:

  1. Efficient use of energy – especially renewable energy
  2. Economical use of Water
  3. Use of Local and sustainable material
  4. Reduction in waste
  5. Improved air quality

There are various tools to measure the environmental performance of buildings and validity of green building design. Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and GRIHA being the leading metrics. IGBC offers services like rating programmes, certifications and green building training programmes. The use of these tools can ensure that the building design is such that it uses energy and water optimally and generates minimum waste through its life cycle. Environment friendly changes can be incorporated not just in building design, but also the interior design by using LEDs, environment friendly material like rattan, wood, using locally produced material and recycling as much as possible.

In recent years, sustainability has increasingly become a common interest of numerous disciplines. The reason for this is growing awareness of the need of rapid sustainable development. There are some leading Architects in Hyderabad, India, whose designs are greatly influenced by our heritage, and incorporate nature and its elements to the fullest. Biome Environmental Solutions in Bengaluru, Kamath Design Studio, Delhi, Footprints E.A.R.T.H., and Ahmedabad are some of the stalwarts in Green Architecture in India. With a well-planned and large-scale movements supported by the government as well as the private sector India can make a concrete effort towards a concrete-less, green and efficient country.

Under the Smart Cities Mission and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, here are several green buildings that have come up and more are planned. Some buildings of note are the Suzlon One Earth, Pune, CII- Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, Hyderabad and Infinity Benchmark, Kolkata. These buildings have received the valuable LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification which lays framework for healthy, energy efficient, environment positive buildings.

A research by GRIHA says efficient lighting reduces the lighting load by 55 % in a green building. Efficient envelope and efficient lighting reduces building cooling load by 17.5% in air-conditioned and by 74% in non-air-conditioned areas. A green building consumes 51% less energy in non-air-conditioned areas and 37% less in air-conditioned building. The pay-back period of a green building is 3 to 4 years. The total cost saved in a life span of 15 years is approximately 6 times the incremental initial construction cost.

The current situation of pandemic has also reinforced the need for sustainable architecture, for using materials which help the environment instead of harming it and constructing in harmony with the earth, nature and environment. More local materials, greater interaction with the natural elements and minimizing waste, Made in India, would be the norm not far from now. Our time on this earth is borrowed and we owe it to the earth to be respectful of all that we have received from it.

In our last blog we shared some rules for architects towards sustainable architecture. To read check out 9 Basic Rules For Sustainable Architecture.

9 Basic Rules For Sustainable Architecture https://thinkstudios.co.in/sustainable-architecture/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sustainable-architecture-the-way-forward https://thinkstudios.co.in/sustainable-architecture/#respond Wed, 22 Apr 2020 08:00:08 +0000 https://thinkstudios.co.in/?p=1732 Architecture is a profession with many rules, some written and some not. An architect is continuously oscillating between two states. That of following all the rules by the book or making allowances for the imagination and experimentation. And a lot of imagination is inspired by nature. We don’t have to look far to see the proof of this. Our own heritage offers a plethora of things to learn from.

Continuing from my last instagram post on World Heritage Day, I want to reinstate and reemphasis the fact that Indian architecture in its silent eloquence tells us how man and nature are intricately connected. Forts, palaces, and ordinary houses – these were all built around nature at one time. The people innovated and implemented ideas that used nature to the fullest and limited the wastage of resources.

Over the last century, as buildings reached higher into the sky, they not only housed growing populations, but they became symbols of modernity and progress. And somewhere on the way these very buildings also became detrimental to the earth’s climate. Today, 40% of the energy- related global emissions are attributed to buildings and 60% of waste comes from buildings or related activities.

But for smarter planet, buildings can be designed differently – buildings that harness gifts of nature, buildings that need less energy, buildings that breathe. Fortunately, there are various tools to measure the environmental performance of buildings. IGBC, GRIHA being the leading metrics. The use of these tools can ensure that the building uses energy and water optimally and generates minimum waste through its life cycle.

While working on the projects in the UK and USA I got to learn a lot about the construction technologies like Geothermal System and Term Deck that efficiently use the renewable resources reducing the load on non-renewable fossil fuels, oils and gases. In turn reducing the carbon emissions. This is not only beneficial for our environment but also has health, social and financial benefits. It gives me joy to share that our upcoming Farmhouse project in 11,000 sq. Ft is designed to make use of all such resources effectively.

In recent years, sustainability has increasingly become a common interest of numerous disciplines. The reason for this is growing awareness of the need of rapid sustainable development. The concept of Green Architecture, also known as Sustainable Architecture or Green Building, is the theory, science and style of buildings designed and constructed in accordance with environmentally friendly principles. Green Architecture strives to minimize the number of resources consumed in the building’s construction, use and operation, as well as curtailing the harm done to the environment through the emission, pollution, and waste of its components.

Some steps that architects can take towards sustainability –

  1. Start early. Plan well. – The site planning should be done with the intent to reduce the impact of development on the natural environment. The orientation of the building should take advantage of solar access, shading and wind patterns that will lessen the heating and cooling loads. Passive solar designs like shape and form of the building, orientation of the facades and smart shading techniques should be adopted to stop direct solar radiations in hot summer season and give diffused light in the indoors that reduces the use of artificial light during the day.
  2. On site – Regulate the air pollution during construction by making barricades to stop the dust spreading to the surrounding areas.
  3. Materials – Use environment friendly materials with high recyclability. The materials that are composed of renewable resources and are environmentally responsible. This will result in reduced maintenance and replacement costs over the life of the building and improve occupants’ health and productivity. These materials have zero or low off gassing of harmful air emissions, low toxicity, durable and are locally produced. The common materials are clay and sand mixed in water, straw or another fiber, rammed earth or earth bag, wood as timber frame columns and beam, bamboo, and stone.
  4. Ventilation Design – Ventilation system designed for efficient heating and cooling.
  5. Say No – to energy intensive materials like ready mix concrete or use as little of them as possible.
  6. Use the Sun – Have the external lights t powered by Solar energy.
  7. Save Water – Water is source of life, so it should be captured, stored, and recycled. This can be efficiently done by using water saving plumbing fixtures. The use of non-sewage and grey water for site irrigation is a good way to conserve water. Rainwater harvesting should be done. Using paving in the outdoors that is pervious and allow rainwater to percolate, thereby saving rainwater flowing out on the road.
  8. Strategic Landscaping – Landscapes can be planned to maximize passive solar energy. Also, before commencing the digging of earth for foundation, the topsoil should be carefully separated, preserved, and reused for landscaping when the building is complete.
  9. Grow Green – Plant as many native and adaptive plant and tree species as possible.

These strategies and methods lead to a general apprehension about the costliness of these measures. The question – How expensive are green buildings as compared to conventional buildings – is understandable and relevant.

A research by GRIHA says efficient lighting reduces the lighting load by 55 % in a green building. Efficient envelope and efficient lighting reduce building cooling load by 17.5% in air-conditioned and by 74% in non-air-conditioned areas. A green building consumes 51% less energy in non-air-conditioned areas and 37% less in air-conditioned building. The pay-back period of a green building is 3 to 4 years. The total cost saved in a life span of 15 years is approximately 6 times the incremental initial construction cost.

The current situation of pandemic has also reinforced the need for sustainable architecture, for using materials which help the environment instead of harming it and constructing in harmony with the earth, nature, and environment. An Architect’s Tips For Modular Kitchen Design https://thinkstudios.co.in/modular-kitchen-design/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=an-architects-tips-for-modular-kitchen-design https://thinkstudios.co.in/modular-kitchen-design/#respond Thu, 09 Apr 2020 19:20:02 +0000 https://thinkstudios.co.in/?p=1661 A good modular kitchen design can be a life saver, especially in situations like the lockdown, which has had us spending more time than ever in our homes and invariable our kitchens. Kitchens are the spaces which glues together any household. This is where anyone turns to for comfort food, for an occasional sinful indulgence after a job well done, or for an opportunity to have a good time with your family over a favourite dish.

What makes a perfect kitchen design? Over the years working on a wide variety of projects we have worked on kitchens of all kinds and strived to answer various questions. What can be the most frustrating or cumbersome element in the kitchen design. Is there enough and correct kitchen furniture in place? Are the kitchen cupboard design and placement functional enough? Is the modular design truly modular? How to make a choice between, parallel kitchen, open kitchen, or how to choose different elements like an island, bar, number of sinks etc while keeping budget and space constraints in mind. The modern kitchens today double up as multipurpose rooms, hence, the more concentrated effort in a good modular kitchen design, correct trolley design, platform heights, kitchen furniture and the like.

Here are some handy pointers assimilated over time by our team, addressing all the major problem areas for a fabulous kitchen design. Read away:

 1. The secret’s laid out in the Layout

The first aspect to the modular kitchen design is the layout. There are essentially four layout design options, based on your requirement and availability of space. Here are the different layouts to choose from:

Image: The Work Triangle. Source: Pinterest
    • The Work Triangle

KITCHEN working TRIANGLE.

Image: The Work Triangle. Source: manish khanna

This an imaginary Triangle connecting the cook top, sink and refrigerator. As you can see in the image, an efficient kitchen layout minimizes the distance between these three spots to ensure good workflow. There should be no obstacles such as a tall storage cabinet, kitchen island, breakfast counters, furniture and so on within the boundary of the work triangle, or at least in the pathways between the three points.

    • The U-shaped Kitchens

u shaped kitchen

A U-shaped kitchen, as visible in the image above, comprises a continuous kitchen countertop running along three adjacent walls of the kitchen. One can achieve an efficient kitchen work triangle by accommodating the cooktop, the sink and the refrigerator, one in each section of the kitchen, just as in this example.

    • The L-shaped kitchen

L SHAPED KITCHEN

In L-shaped kitchens, the counter top runs along the right-angled walls of the kitchen, with an open area in the center. The third side of the L-shaped kitchen is usually an empty space, which can be used to store appliances – the refrigerator, oven, microwave. This type of layout offers efficiency in the kitchen, because one does not have to walk too far to access the different work zones.

    • The Island

Adam Chandler island kitchen

Image: Adam Chandler island kitchen. Source: Pinterest

This layout, as shown in the image, houses a freestanding ‘island’ counter-top in the middle of the space, which can also be used to built-in storage. Most islands have a side devoted to cooking and a side devoted to eating, prep work, cooking, cleaning or eating. This design is perfect for an open floor plan and requires a high level of maintenance as you have to keep everything neat and tucked away.

Decide your seating height. If you want to have bar stools at your island, you will need to decide if it’s 36 or 42 inches high. The open floor area around the island also requires some calculation.

We suggest about 3 feet of floor space on the ends of the island. The 2 working sides of an island should have min. 42 inches of space in between. The dimensions for a kitchen island should be at least 4 feet long and 3 feet wide so that two people can work on the island counter top standing at the two longer sides, facing each other across the width (or the depth) of the island. See this interesting island storage solutions.

  2. Open or closed?

Image Source: amber interiors Open Kitchen.

For centuries the kitchen was strictly a workspace. Often, the Indian kitchens were tucked away in the back of the house, with room just enough for the essentials. However, kitchens today are a completely different story. The approach to this part of the house has evolved tremendously over time. Now the kitchen is in the beginning of the house if not a beautiful open centerpiece almost. How to choose a design that works for your home?

An open kitchen design, the kind in the image above,  can look stunning with the right kitchen furniture and cupboards and fixtures. And for precisely this reason, it can be a bit cumbersome to maintain as it needs to be kept clean with all accessories and gadgets and kitchen paraphernalia tucked away. But it has a lot of pros – like easy access, can double up as a dining area, a bar and looks gorgeous.

Of course, not everyone is comfortable giving everyone a view of their kitchen, as while it can be a nice place to hang out, it is also a very private space. A closed kitchen design gives the freedom to leave the kitchen smells and mess behind when serving meals. It also offers greater storage options and possibly less of a mental stress as it will not be on display all the time. On the other hand it reduces accessibility to the dining area and makes it difficult to interact with visitors, friends and family while in the kitchen.

Ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

Bumper Point: If going ahead with an open kitchen Invest in an industrial-strength kitchen exhaust. You can rest assured that your guests will not be able to smell the curry you just cooked in the morning.

3. What’s on the cabinets? – All About Materials

A kitchen cannot exist without efficient and flawless kitchen cupboard design. Here are some options of materials that can be considered for the cabinets in the modular kitchen design to ensure the kitchen looks fabulous without compromising on the functionality.

  •  Solid Wood
Wood is by far the most common material used for cabinets. It is a non-toxic and a renewable resource. Hardwoods like Teak and Sheesham (Indian rosewood) are common materials used in Indian kitchen cabinets. However, bad-quality timber boards can show warps and dents, so care must be taken while selecting wood. Change in humidity levels can damage the core and surface of the wood, and wood also needs frequent polishing to maintain its smooth texture and shine. Wood can be costly and time-consuming material to work with.

  • Wood Veneers
Veneers are slices or sheets of solid wood that have refined grains and beauty of natural wood. Many brands like CenturyPly,GreenPly  provide good-quality veneers all over India. Wood veneers are sustainable and economical as compared to wood and can be given different finishes like matte, semi-gloss and high gloss. Veneers are also a bit high on maintenance as they require polishing after a period and just like wood, they are not scratch resistant.
  • Acrylic Finish
Acrylic finish has certain benefits. It imparts a high-end modern look. Because of its highly reflective surface acrylic bestows a very sophisticated look to the kitchen, giving high-gloss finish, which can be in a wide range of colors. Acrylic finish It does not fade and is very easy to maintain.

  • Laminates – Laminates are durable, moisture-resistant and sturdy. From matte to high gloss, unicore to digital and even customized printing on the surface, there is a plethora of options to choose from. Numerous brands like Merino LaminatesCentury LaminatesRoyale Toucheand Greenlam Laminates, offer an abundance of designs and finishes.
  • PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) sheet – This material is quite inexpensive and easy to install. Being waterproof and oil-proof, it makes a practical option for Kitchen Cabinets. However, these sheets yellow with age. Some plastics soften with time, so the joints can loosen.
  • Stainless Steel Or Aluminum – Metal kitchen cabinets can be very strong and durable, though they can be very expensive option. A slightly cost-effective way can be to have the cabinet carcass made of wood and the doors or shutters to be made out of steel.

Making a big splash with the Backsplash & Countertop – Some More About Materials

Image: Beautiful Backsplash. Source: Pinterest

Check out this beautiful backsplash of aquamarine ceramic tiles highlighting the serene white kitchen. A unique backsplash can almost act as a mini feature wall for a kitchen. Selecting the correct colours and design for the backsplash can be confusing. What comes first – the kitchen counter or the backsplash? What colour scheme or coordination will work? Is it alright to mix patterns? The seemingly unlimited choice can be overwhelming.

A good start will be to focus on the countertop first. In any kitchen design the countertop is the mainstay in your kitchen and can constitute a good chunk of the budget. Hence, getting that right would be crucial.

A backsplash protects the kitchen walls and adds color and texture. If there is a backsplash which truly takes your breath away, even before you have looked at countertops, then you could select the kitchen counter based on the backsplash. The choice will be narrowed down. If making a statement is what you are looking for, such as the one in the pic, then a quiet, subtler countertop material will work better so that it doesn’t fight with the backsplash.

Following is the list of materials you can choose from:

  • Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles
For their practicality and finish options, they are the popular choice. They come in finishes that even resemble stone or wood. Both can be used individually or can even be mixed and matched to create interesting combinations. These are very durable and easy on maintenance.
  • Glass
Tempered glass gives sleek and seamless look to the back splash. The beauty of a glass back splash is that you can choose anything, even a bespoke piece of artwork screen-printed and mounted on the back of the glass.
  • Engineered Stone
Also referred to as quartz composite, an engineered stone backsplash is made of crushed quartz mixed with resin. These high performing stones are heat and scratch resistant and very tough and make a great choice for both countertop and backsplash.
  • Granite
Granite is the most common finish, which work equally well in traditional and contemporary settings. It is known for durability and heat resistance.
  • Composite- Corian and Hi- Macs
Usually made from a blend of one-third resin and two-thirds natural mineral, they offer extraordinary design flexibility and can be seamlessly molded into angles and curves, which means no joints between worktop and backsplash. This feature makes them easy to keep clean and hygienic, because there are no joins where dirt can accumulate.
  • Marble
Marble is evergreen. The natural beauty of a marble never fails to bring a luxurious look to the kitchen. However, that marble is porous, so it needs sealing and resealing against staining. It also scratches more easily than other materials. You have to accept marble for what it is. It’s beautiful, but not maintenance free.
  • Polished Plaster– Texturally, it can range from highly polished and smooth to rough and weathered. The polished finish is durable and easy on maintenance, looks neat and clean. However, the textured finish can be high maintenance, as in an incident of getting chipped or cracked it is difficult to fix or replaced.
  • Stainless Steel– This is an interesting option. Work in an industrial vibe with a stainless-steel backsplash, which comes in sheets of flat steel that can be fixed directly to the wall with either glue or screws.

  5. The Art of Storage

Even if you know exactly what you want your new kitchen to look like, planning the cabinetry is quite a feat. How much storage do you need? How much cabinetry can you install without making your new kitchen feel smaller than the original? Exactly what needs to be stored where?

Here are some kitchen cupboard design and storage parameters to consider for your modern kitchen design.

  • Cabinet or drawer?
Although cabinets often cost less than drawers, it has been found that deep and wide drawers tend to be more useful. They allow you to use the entire depth of a space and are easier to use, all the while making the exterior look neat once the drawers are closed. It would be important to ensure availability of sufficient depth.

  • Maximizing storage:
If space permits, one whole wall can be act as a storage wall – top to bottom. This clears up the clutter from your countertop and makes the kitchen look bigger and roomier. To maximize the corner storage, carousels can be installed, that can store plenty of items while keeping them accessible.

  • Adding vertical storage:
Vertical storage, as in the image, is a great way to increase storage space in a kitchen. The pantry cabinet in the image has swing-out shelves that allow easier access to food than would a deep, stationary shelving. The real stars of this vertical storage, however, are the very narrow pullout cabinets, used here for oils and herbs and located right next to the cooktop where they will be used.

  • Integrate your appliances:
Hiding appliances by integrating them into your cabinetry. Most brands now offer refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers that can be integrated, and can simply be concealed behind kitchen panels so they blend in seamlessly with the cabinetry.

Appliances integrated within the kitchen design

  •  Measure up before buying appliances:
No one wants to get stuck with an OTG that takes up half of your countertop. Appliances that are too big can overwhelm and clutter up your kitchen. It’s hugely important to choose the right-size appliances especially for a small kitchen. Invest some time in taking measurements, and planning in detail which appliance goes where in the kitchen.

  6. The BIG Dos And Don’ts Of Kitchen Design

Considering the designing, the cabinetry, the appliances, the kitchen often is the most expensive part of the house. Hence, it is very important that the modular kitchen is planned and designed for efficiency and functionality. Here are some things that you can watch out for or keep in mind:

  • Make a comprehensive list of electrical appliances that will be installed in the kitchen and allow provision for the power points accordingly.
  • Kitchen island should only be provided if you have 12’ to 14’ wide or bigger kitchen to avoid crowding.
  • Materials like like MDF or particle board should be avoided. Instead use BWP Plywood for cabinets.
  • The hardware should be in stainless still to avoid rusting.
  • Select the countertop material as per the usability of the kitchen. (please refer point number 4, where we have listed the material options.)
  • Lighting is essential. Provide ample lighting for the food preparation area by installing task lights and ceiling lights that illuminate the countertop. Internal cabinet lightings with automatic sensors are also a great option.
  • Lack of proper storage can lead to chaos in the kitchen. If the kitchen is small, a good way to add storage is by adding full height cabinets. Plan for drawers with cutlery, plates and cups organizers. Segregate dry storage spaces from everyday utensils.
  • The standard height of the kitchen countertop is around 34 inches. There should be a gap of 4 inches between the top of the countertop and the elbow when you are standing to avoid strain on the back.
  • The standard depth of a kitchen countertop and the lower cabinets and drawer units should be 2 feet. It may vary depending on the size of the kitchen appliances such as the gas stove or cooking range that must be installed.
  • The minimum clearance between the kitchen countertop and the upper cabinets ranges between 24” and 27”. And the depth of the overhead cabinet should not be more than 15” to avoid head banging while working
  • Leave enough space for your refrigerator. An ideal way to do this would be to finalize the refrigerator model and then leave 2” space from the back of the wall and over it to avoid overheating.
  • Plan the microwave at a height of 14” to 18”
  • And last but not the least make sure your kitchen has proper ventilation.Kitchen ergnomics

  7. Making the Kitchen Pop!

  • Herb Garden – If space allows, try adding open shelves, you can put some green plants or even herbs used for seasoning. It is a lovely way to give your green thumb a chance and have a little bit of your own kitchen garden in the kitchen itself. Green is a colour that inspires peace and tranquility and plants look beautiful on their own in an eclectic collection of colourful cute planters.

  • Accessoris – Use interesting hardware and unique handles and door and drawer knobs. • Dining Nook – If you have a big open kitchen, add a dining spot. Depending on the area a cozy little dining corner or even an elaborate seating for dining can be added. It can serve as a lovely little nook to have the early morning breakfast, a quick meal or a relaxed coffee break. Also, a great place for the whole family to hangout while meals are being cooked and enjoyed together.

There are a lot of areas where we can play around with colours, material, textures and create a unique combination which stands out.

  • Add a bar: A compact wood and glass bar can add elegance and panache to the kitchen. Make sure there is suitable lighting to make your crystal glass display gleam and shine.

Modular Kitchen vs Made-On-Site Kitchen – The Age-Old War

While designing your dream home there is a temptation to go into even the minutest details of the design. In such a case, a factory made, ready to install modular kitchen may not give the satisfaction of having designed and planned everything by yourself. Old schoolers may feel more inclined to go for made-on-site kitchens. While made-on-site kitchen is a valid option, different situations and scenarios call for different solutions.

A made-on-site kitchen works best if:

  • You have a lot of time and are under no rush to complete the project
  • You have razor sharp clarity on your design and functionality requirements. Each element and sizing detail can be customized which gives you a lot of flexibility, provided it is well planned.
  • You are looking for durability that will last generations. Make on site construction allows for extremely robust constructions that can last decades.
  • You are on a budget. A made-on-site kitchen can be economical as compared to the high-end modular kitchen options.

On the other hand, a modular kitchen works well when:

  • You are running on a tight schedule. Since the modular kitchen is built in the factory, the construction work of your home and your kitchen can progress in tandem without hindering each other.
  • You are looking for a kitchen that is sleek, luxurious and stylish while being highly functional and easy to manage. A lot of companies these days offer high-end kitchen designs, with great attention to details.

An elegant modular kitchen

A kitchen is an indispensable part of any home. A good kitchen design will consider the budget and space constraints as well as design aspirations. With careful consideration of the above-mentioned points and a trusted architect and designer, you can be sure of a kitchen that you would love to spend most time in.

Architecture is a profession with many rules, some written some not. An architect is continuously gravitating between following all the rules by the book or making a space for the imagination or experimentation. And this is a difficult balance coz you are trying to challenge the conception and push boundaries and innovate.

16 Tips For Your Dream Walk In Closet https://thinkstudios.co.in/walk-in-closet/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=16-tips-for-your-dream-walk-in-closet https://thinkstudios.co.in/walk-in-closet/#respond Sat, 28 Mar 2020 10:39:18 +0000 https://thinkstudios.co.in/?p=1613 One of the most iconic scenes of the movie Sex and the City, takes place in a walk in closet. When Carrie Bradshaw puts on an impromptu fashion-show for her friends and revisits all her favourite clothes. This fashion extravaganza takes place in the walk in closet of her apartment, with the friends cheering from the bed. Another momentous scene from the same movie is again in yet another gorgeous walk in closet. Much bigger, roomier with bright lights, when Mr. Big proposes Carrie with a Manolo Blahnik shoe right there on the floor of the beautiful closet.

Fabulous walk in closets and wardrobe designs have made epochal appearances in movies and TV shows, and have always remained things that are much desired but often assumed to be luxuries for large apartments and houses. With the actresses sweeping in, throwing open their bedroom wardrobes, to browse through rows and rows of shoes and bags and gorgeous dresses, as if in your own private little mall with unlimited try-it-on options. Good news is, that these rooms of wonder can be yours too, with some clever closet and wardrobe design tips.

       1. Shine the light fantastic

Lights are elemental for a good closet or wardrobe design for bedrooms. Light is needed, not just to spot where the clothes are, but to bring luminescence to the walk in closet. Enough bright light to light-up every corner of the cupboard, so that not one item of clothing or accessory gets missed out and neglected. Also, bright light makes the room feel bigger and brighter, giving a sense of more space than it may truly have. Adding lights in the recesses will give it a greater sense of space and light in any modern wardrobe.

         2. All about colours

Colours play a crucial role in any cupboard design. While designing the walk in closet, it is recommended to go for neutral colours. This is for multiple reasons. Neutral colours will not clash with the clothes, shoes and accessories that will be placed in the closet, making everything easier to locate and make them appear aesthetically appealing. Closet design with simple lines for shelves and tall spaces for hangers, help the space look neat and organized with the neutral backdrop making the colourful clothes pop-out and look inviting.

    3. Mirror on the wall

No getting-ready ritual can be completed without a mirror. It is usual to have a full length mirror on a wardrobe door. However, a walk in closet is also a good place to mount a beautiful full length mirror. The options for mirrors are endless, from ornate gilded mirrors to simple sleek mirrors with minimalistic frames of no frames at all. Make the closet be your own little green-room by adding Hollywood lights all around it. The mirror and the lights add to the sense of space to the walk in closet. Add a little table by the mirror for your make-up and jewellery and you can be assured that you always step out in style!

     4. Place to sit

An excellent way to spruce up the wardrobe internal design is by adding a stool, maybe even with a fabric top, or a couple of Ottomans to sit and tie up those gladiator heels, or have someone sit and watch as you put on your own fashion show. Or to simply sit in front of the mirror to do your makeup. A clever closet design will include a good seating option which can work as a chair to put on shoes or do your makeup or even reach up to the top most shelves in your closet. What is more, they will make the closet look cosy and inviting.

   5. Slide open, glide in

If there is space limitation, then sliding wardrobe design can come to the rescue. Have the doors for your walk in closet slide open. Make the portal to the land of wonders open through doors that slide, which you can push open with a flourish and step into your wonderland. Sliding doors save space, you don’t have to move back to open the door wide open, just slide and glide in. Sliding doors also look elegant and chic. If you can automate the turning on of the lights with the sliding of the door, even better.

  6. Shop Window Wonder

What fun if you can window shop at home. Modern wardrobe designs for the bedroom can help you get just that. If you are a hoarder of all things shoes and bags, go ahead and install beautiful shelves and flaunt your lovely collection. One, they would make a great display to have the beautiful shoes and bags arranged nicely and also it is a practical way to be able to view all your possessions in one go instead of having to rummage through to find the correct match. Let your dresses hang in beautiful rows which you can browse through just as in a store and make a selection.

A glass door to the walk in closet will make the shop window look complete.

  7. Minimise for maximum effect

While the idea of a good closet design is to assign appropriate shelf space and hanger space for all your clothes, shoes, bags and other accessories, minimalism is the way to go. Have the arrangement minimalistic – with sufficient lighting and clean spaces which bring out the display and highlight elements and make them stand out. Cluttered spaces or even too many decoration items in your cupboard design can make the space look confusing and aesthetically unpleasing.

  8. All Access Granted

A lovely way to make a walk in closet practical is to allow access to the bathroom. Once you pop into the walk in closet – you can go take a shower and emerge all dressed and ready to step-out courtesy the walk in closet, fully equipped with all that you need. Including mirrors and a dresser. Enter a dishevelled sleepy person, emerge “ready-to-take-on-the-world” Diva!

  9. Treasure trove

Add a lovely dimension with your own treasure trove in your walk in closet with a special section for all your jewellery and other knick-knacks. In your wooden wardrobe include velvet lined drawers, with compartments for rings and bangles and hooks for necklaces and chains. Add to this some clever lighting and a mirror for you to look into as you accessorise your latest ensemble. This will help you admire all your lovely jewellery as well as make it easily accessible. Similar cabinets and cubby holes can also be used to store ties, belts, cufflinks, watches and pocket squares.

  10. The Diva Dresser

If you are blessed with really large space for your walk in closet, go ahead and add a well-equipped dressing table. One place to keep all your makeup, with lights around the mirror, and a comfortable seat, so you can get ready in the closet itself. You can also add electric fixtures for your hair dryers, straighteners and other such accessories. Don’t forget the vanity mirror lights. A wardrobe with dressing tables is definitely a plus.

  11. Something’s in the air

A wardrobe is a space which remains closed most of the time, making it susceptible to moulds and smells unless the ventilation has been taken care of. If your wardrobe design allows ample space and the plan permits it would be ideal to have a window. It will add a green element as well as fresh air to the closet. If that is not possible, some other options that will do the trick are installing mechanical ventilation or using a dehumidifier. Proper circulation of air will prevent the precious clothes from getting mouldy and damp, thereby increasing the life of your clothes and accessories.

  12. Showstopper

Any space can be converted into an art piece with a stand-out feature. Make room in the closet design for a show-stealer feature wall with a panel or wall in contrasting colour, stained glass partitions, an ornate beautiful mirror, a painting or even a mounted sculpture can add a brilliant dimension to the closet. If you are a real clotheshorse, a fabulous way to glam up your closet would be to frame and display some iconic dress (of course, one which you will not wear any more), for instance your wedding dress, or your farewell/ freshers/ prom dress. And if you kids, then you could make a clothes collage with their first onesies and blankies.

  13. Clothes Art

Let your creativity shine, and turn your clothes into art pieces. Add to your wardrobe’s internal design by adorning with clothes arranged into beautiful displays using their colours, fabric, flow. Hang your scarves and other drapes to make a flowy breezy art – functional beauty in your walk in closet.

  14. Wardrobe Closet

In case there is not enough space for a walk in closet, you can always make modifications to the wardrobe in your room, to serve the purpose. A wall to wall and floor to ceiling wardrobe will do the trick. Sliding doors to maximise storage space, equipped with an assortment of racks, drawers, hanger space and shelves to store all sorts of clothing and accessories neatly and in easy access. Using the entire height of the wardrobe will ensure ample space for your belongings. Add sensor lights which turn on when the door is opened as well as lights in all the corners and dark nooks to give the wardrobe a nice and bright look. The door can also double up as a full length mirror.

  15. Organise to glamourise

For the Walk in closet or the wardrobe to be utilised to the fullest and to be at its best beautiful it is important for everything to be organised well. Everyone loves Marie Kondo’s organisation ideas. You can go ahead and come up with your own too. But a general to go with would be to itemise things as per their uses and types, hankies, innerwear, dresses, jeans, trousers, blouses. Then accessories – belts, bags, shoes, watches, earrings, necklaces and other knick-knacks. Decluttering helps before re-organising so that you have only what you really like and will use in your closet. This generates a feeling of happiness and peace.

  16. Heights & Distances

Here are some simple rules of the thumb for wardrobe dimensions that you can keep in mind while planning the closet. The dimensions of your closet racks, hanger heights at different levels should be proportionate to your height and the height of the closet. These will help in a closet which is easily accessible to you without overreaching or bending too much and of course maximising the capacity of your closet.

Here’s to a perfect closet!

These simple tips can help in making a great walk in closet or transform your simple wooden, 4 door wardrobe in the bedroom. It is important to keep in mind that it is a lot about using space cleverly and using a lot of mirrors and well placed light fixtures. Small and carefully planned additions like wooden panelling, the colours and textures, pops of colours can go a long way. After all, who would not want to get ready in such a beautiful space. Step-up your style not just with clothes but with the place where your clothes and you spend most time in.

Styling and Decor Essentials For A Positive Home https://thinkstudios.co.in/styling-and-decor-essentials-for-a-positive-home/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=styling-and-decor-essentials-for-a-positive-home https://thinkstudios.co.in/styling-and-decor-essentials-for-a-positive-home/#respond Sun, 19 Jan 2020 04:11:09 +0000 https://thinkstudios.co.in/?p=1568 Every new year comes with unlimited possibilities and a chance to make life even better, realise dreams, scale new heights. The turn of the year brings a promise of being exceptional. Of expanding horizons and testing boundaries. The year-end often witnesses people taking stock of the year gone by, evaluating successes and learning from failures, getting wish-lists and goals and plans ready for the new year. For it is a fresh start, a new beginning where nothing has gone wrong yet.

And as we prepare to welcome the new year in our own special ways, here are some tips to welcome positivity and abundance this 2020 into your homes. Whether you are designing a new home, or you are moving around things in your present home, here are some tips that will definitely help make it a more positive place.

  • Bring In The Sun

Our immediate surroundings impact our mental health. It is a good idea to have surroundings that are bright and it is even better if it can be done through natural light. Sunlight is a great way to bring in a cherry feel into your rooms, so if you are lucky to have large windows and live in a sunny place, throw open the shades and let the light fill up the spaces. In case you are not so lucky, fret not! Use white lights and reduce dark surfaces. Covering dark surfaces with cheerful pastels and whites also help. Do let the fresh air and sunlight come in for at least some time during the day to clear out the stale air from the day before and freshen up things.

  • Clutter Be Gone

We have become hoarders with so many lovely things around us. A thing of beauty gives joy forever, but when there are too many things of beauty they can often lead to clutter and clutter is never a good sign if you are aiming for a space full of positive energy. Clutter gathers dust, looks untidy and generates a feeling of restlessness and negativity in those living around it. Now would be a good idea to say goodbye to all the things that you no longer need, and those that no longer serve any purpose.  Declutter and make space for maybe newer and nicer things. You will enjoy the cleared up space so much that you will not be in a hurry to fill it up again.

  • Clean And Clear Spaces

Our homes are places we come back to after a long day at work, or when we need solace, or just enjoy a quiet moment by ourselves. It should generate a great sense of calm as soon as we enter. Keep the décor minimalist, have lots of clean spaces, free from jarring distractions. It is also a good idea to make a personal space, even a meditative area where you feel completely at peace. Everywhere you look, you should be able to see something that makes you happy and harmonious.

  • Get Close To Nature

Nature is a great healer. Whether you live in a flat or a bungalow, a personal garden, even a tiny balcony garden works wonders. Green is a colour that is said to soothe and relax. Place green leafy plants in your balcony or your lawns. You can also have green leafy plants indoors. They instantly make the environs beautiful and keep you close to the soothing nature. Some good indoor plants are snake plants, money plants, lucky bamboo and palm. Add plants to bring in harmony to your house and within its inhabitants.

  • There’s something in the air

A beautiful home gets an added dimension if it even smells inviting. The stores are flooded with interesting options which can add a subtle but beautiful scent to your living space. You can choose from a variety of diffusers and use aromatic essential oils, electric diffusers or the kind that use candles. Even scented candles make for a great sight and fragrance, or our good old incense sticks and sambhranis. Some fragrances like lavender even get a good night’s sleep. If you want to avoid chemicals, feel free to use fragrant and natural potpourri in different parts of the house. Go ahead and use them to spread that aroma.

  • Clear the path

A great way to ensure you enter your home with positivity is to keep the foyer, doorway or whatever little or big space you have by the main door clean and beautiful. An ornate wooden mirror, some plants can do the trick. In Indian homes, we often have a shoe rack as soon as we enter. That’s fine. You can have an interesting shoe rack and decorate the surface with crystal turtles, small plants and even a bowl of potpourri.

  • Make a good entrance

The first thing that you see when you reach your home is the main door and the name and number plate. A beautiful possibly handcrafted name plate gives a wonderful appeal to the door and acts as a great first impression about those who live inside. You can choose quirky, ornate wooden, simple and elegant, handpainted in Madhubani style, with an added space for a small plant, terracotta name plates. Each nameplate can be unique and ensure a smile on the face of those coming in.

  • Small changes that make major difference

Certain furnishings like curtains, table linen, bed spreads occupy a large surface area in the home. So one very simple way to brighten up your home is the change the curtains and bedspreads. Curtains are a great way to go as you can play around with colours, textures, prints and fabric. Team a sheer curtain with a colourful solid curtain, printed curtains with solid block curtains, dark colours with light, the possibilities are endless. Have pleasant bedspreads to invite good sleep and table linen on which the food decorated looks like art.

A clean home and a clean heart is all that is needed to live a happy life!.

Sometimes it is always better to get an expert help in bringing the positivity to the house. Think Studios can help you in regarding re-decoration or interior designing of your home or office.

How to build a good home theatre https://thinkstudios.co.in/build-home-theatre/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-build-a-good-home-theatre https://thinkstudios.co.in/build-home-theatre/#respond Tue, 31 Dec 2019 22:37:28 +0000 https://thinkstudios.co.in/?p=1541 Family time is the best time. Even if it is just watching a movie together. Especially, when the movie watching experience can be mind-blowing with your very own home theatre.
So, what makes a good home theatre? There are some very crucial elements that go into making the perfect home theatre and today we will tell you those elements and how we at Think Studios incorporated them for one of our movie-buff clients.

Sound

A movie watching experience can be immersive only if you are getting enveloped by the accompanying sound. Each raindrop on screen, should sound like rain inside your room, each bullet whizzes past your ear and thunder jolts you off your seats. To achieve this in just the right amount, we have used wooden panelling on the walls as well as the ceiling to give the complete surround sound, without it being too much or too low.

Light

A perfect home theatre has just the correct amount of darkness, with no stray slivers of light spoiling your movie experience. We have given this customised home theatre, dark walls and ceiling, with carefully placed accent lights to ensure great viewing without the hindrance of unwanted reflections and distractions.

Seating

A great seating in a home theatre would be the kind which will give each viewer an uninterrupted view of the screen and perfect comfort. We have used the best recliners, to ensure that once you are in all that exists for you is the movie on the screen and the popcorn in your hands.

Fun

That is the crux of the whole thing. Is it not? We have added a pop of colour by using red recliners. It is a room ready to be enjoyed by family and friends of all ages.
So, who’s getting popcorn!?
